6th Grade Boys Travel A Team are 2010 State Finalists!

The 6th grade boys “A” travel basketball team completed a remarkable season on March 21st by playing in the Massachusetts state championship game. The team’s journey to the state title game began a few weeks earlier when they finished the regular season of Metrowest League’s Division 1 tied for 2nd place with an 8-4 record. After a bye in the first round of the league playoffs, the team followed up their solid regular season with impressive wins over Stoughton and North Quincy in the quarter-final and semi-final games 60-47 and 55-42, respectively. Then, in a rematch from last year’s D1 championship game, Sharon fell to undefeated and defending champion Newton 47-36 in a hard fought, defensive battle. However, Sharon’s appearance in the D1 championship game earned them a berth in the “Large Town” State Tournament held at Mass Premier Courts. In the quarter-finals of the state tourney, Sharon defeated western Massachusetts representative Pittsfield 53-42. After falling behind 9-0 in the opening minutes, the Eagles went on a 34-4 run to end the first half and take a commanding lead that they never relinquished. Then, in an amazing semi-final game, the Eagles beat a resilient Concord-Carlisle squad 60-59 in overtime on some incredible free throw shooting. The victory earned the Eagles a spot in the state title game against long-time rival and nemesis Newton. After falling behind early against powerhouse Newton, Sharon battled back with some terrific three point shooting to close the deficit to single digits with about 4 minutes to play before finally succumbing 64-55. Members of the team include: Jordan Mello-Klein, Matt Lowerre, Eric Ross, Michael Dumont, David Roelke, Joey Dowler, Daniel Bender, Coby Tippett, Shane Brandes, Andrew Filipkowski, James Dunlea, and Alex Dubrow. Head coach of the team was Marc Filipkowski with assistant coaches Steve Dubrow and Rick Dumont. Many of the team members will now compete this spring for Mass Premier’s U12 AAU squad. Way to go Eagles!
