Sharon 7th grade boys "Maroon" team wins Metrowest Group 5 Championship

This past Sunday, the Sharon 7th Grade Boys Maroon Team was victorious against a tough Brookline team to win the Metrowest Group 5 Championship capping an incredible 10 game win streak. The team was coached by Lee Kaplan with Dave Fergenbaum and Jory Zunesnshine as assistant coaches. The team played in Division 4 of the Metrowest Basketball League and started the season with 2 wins and 4 losses. On January 26th the team won against Dighton-Rehoboth and never lost again. The boys won their last six regular season games and were placed in a playoff grouping with nine division 4 teams and four division 3 teams. After winning their first game against North Attleboro, the team found itself down by 13 points in the fourth quarter against a division 3 Westwood team. Incredibly, the team rallied to tie the game on a layup by Ben Kaplan and won on two clutch free throws by Brandon Buckman by a score of 43-41. The team then went on to beat Division 3 Needham in the semi-finals paced by great offense from Noah Kamens and Coleman Loftus and then faced Division 3 Brookline in the finals. In the championship game the team was led by the great rebounding and “in the paint” scoring of Coleman Loftus. The team’s trademark diamond press and 2-3 zone defense kept Brookline from getting into any offensive rhythm. Sam Emerman, Brandon Buckman and Danujan Thiru ran the Eagles’ offensive sets with skill and provided many assists. Ben Prokus and Evan Zunsenshine played aggressive defense harassing most outside shots and causing mayhem in the full court press. The offense was provided by Loftus, Noah Kamens and Ben Kaplan. Sharon had a clear edge rebounding as Sam Spencer, Jon Wald and Sam Fergenbaum crashed the boards. Guard Zach Cheung was injured and did not play in the playoffs. Max Brody was also injured for most of the season but provided great moral support at most games. Congratulations to the players and coaches!
